Our Technology

Smaller, softer & simpler sensing systems.

The Problem

Cardiac arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death account for up to 20% of all deaths, necessitating ongoing fundamental research into heart physiology, disease susceptibility, and therapeutic development. Rodent studies remain vital in developing our understanding of the heart, to promote both human and animal health.

The gold-standard for monitoring heart function is to monitor the electrical activity of the heart, using electrocardiography (ECG). However, restraining, confining or tethering animals to acquire this data introduces stress and limits data representability. Whereas implantable ECG devices require a complex major surgery, specialist training and a period of animal convalescence.

A simpler, non-invasive and high-throughput solution is needed.

Our Solution

Metazoa is developing a platform for monitoring rodent physiology non-invasively, without need for restraint, tethering or confinement. By using miniature, skin-compliant devices, we will support the collection of cardiac, breathing and locomotion data from free-moving, small animals.

Continuous Monitoring for Multiple Days

A skin-conformal form-factor which introduces minimal discomfort and iatrogenic damage.

High-quality Physiology Data

Skin-compliant sensors suitable for collecting high-fidelity ECG data, with discernible waveform features.

Enhanced Animal Welfare

Enables unsupervised and non-invasive physiology monitoring without introducing stress from restraint, tethering of confinement.

Greater Research Flexibility

A simple, surgery-free option for collecting data from free-moving rodents, empowering more ambitious experimental design.
